An unusual summer job for the right person

Yukon Plastics is looking for a practical, creative, capable person to join us for a summer of circular economy work, rural innovation, hands-on making, cleanup, maintenance, and big northern possibilities.

This is not a typical summer job.

Yukon Plastics transforms waste HDPE and PP plastic into useful, durable, beautiful products. We are a small, family-owned Yukon business working to change how people see plastic waste: not as garbage, but as a resource with value, purpose, and design potential.

This summer, Yukon Plastics is expanding into Stewart Crossing, where we are developing Crooked Creek Basecamp as our rural production, workshop, visitor education, and circular economy storytelling site. The Assistant Manager will help support this exciting transition by creating products, preparing materials, cleaning and organizing work areas, helping with site maintenance, setting up workshop and visitor spaces, assisting with signage and displays, contributing to social media and website updates, and helping tell the story of Yukon Plastics’ next chapter.

About the location

The position will be based primarily in Stewart Crossing, Yukon, a small community with access to rivers, trails, quiet, and space. Crooked Creek Basecamp is being developed as the new home for Yukon Plastics production, workshops, and visitor engagement.

Accommodation is included. There is electricity and internet on site. This opportunity could also work well for a couple, where one person takes the Yukon Plastics position and the other works remotely. Wonderful canoe and hiking trips are right here, on your days off explore the mountains behind and the river. A great river trip is Mayo to Stewart Crossing, beautiful beaches, fantastic scenery. Your employer is a canoe and hike guide and can assess your skills and assist in your adventurous summer.

A dog or two may be considered for the right applicant, provided they are a good fit for the site, accommodation, and working environment.

Key responsibilities

The Assistant Manager will help with a mix of production, workshop support, cleanup, maintenance, marketing, outreach, and site preparation connected to Yukon Plastics and Crooked Creek Basecamp.

Responsibilities may include:

• Sorting, cleaning, and preparing waste plastic for production and workshops
• Creating Yukon Plastics products using approved tools, equipment, moulds, and production processes
• Finishing, packaging, and preparing products for sale, shipping, markets, workshops, and visitor displays
• Cleaning, organizing, and maintaining production, storage, workshop, and visitor areas
• Helping set up and maintain Yukon Plastics’ Stewart Crossing workshop and visitor education site
• Preparing workshop spaces for school, corporate, community, tourism, and visitor programming
• Supporting occasional public workshops, demonstrations, markets, and events
• Helping with site cleanup, basic maintenance, and practical improvements at Crooked Creek Basecamp
• Assisting with basic landscaping, trail/access cleanup, brush clearing, outdoor tidying, and general site presentation
• Helping with light cabin and visitor-area maintenance connected to Yukon Plastics programming and the development of Crooked Creek Basecamp
• Installing signs, setting up displays, and helping create interpretive materials connected to Yukon Plastics’ circular economy story
• Keeping tools, materials, supplies, and workspaces organized, safe, and ready for use
• Creating social media content about the move to Stewart Crossing, the development of Crooked Creek Basecamp, and Yukon Plastics’ work
• Assisting with website and blog updates
• Helping develop a strong tourism-circular economy story that connects waste plastic transformation, rural innovation, Stewart Crossing, and northern creativity
• Assisting with product development, prototyping, testing, and documentation
• Supporting client, partner, visitor, and workshop participant communication
• Other tasks as assigned that support Yukon Plastics’ production, outreach, education, marketing, workshop, site maintenance, and visitor engagement activities

Training and safety

Yukon Plastics is committed to providing a safe, supportive, and well-prepared work environment. Training will be provided for the tools, equipment, production processes, cleanup tasks, maintenance activities, and workshop duties used in the role.

Because this position is based in a rural setting and may involve periods of independent work, additional safety training will be included, such as:

• Bear Aware training
• Working Safely Alone training
• Site-specific safety orientation
• Tool and equipment safety training
• Workshop and participant safety procedures

The successful applicant will be expected to follow all safety procedures, communicate clearly, use tools and equipment responsibly, and help maintain a safe, organized, and welcoming environment for staff, visitors, workshop participants, and guests.

The right person might be

We are looking for someone who is flexible, capable, creative, and willing to jump into a wide variety of tasks.

You do not need to already know how to do everything. You do need to be willing to learn, work carefully, be practical, and bring a good attitude to a small and evolving workplace.

This role may be a good fit for someone who:

• Enjoys hands-on work and making things
• Does not mind cleanup, organizing, maintenance, and practical site work
• Is interested in waste reduction, circular economy, design, tourism, or rural business development
• Can work independently and take initiative
• Is comfortable in a small community and a developing rural site
• Likes variety and does not need every day to look the same
• Can help keep spaces safe, tidy, welcoming, and functional
• Has an eye for what needs doing and is willing to pitch in
• Has an interest in storytelling, photography, social media, or visual presentation
• Is willing to help with both creative work and practical site tasks
• Is responsible, thoughtful, and able to work respectfully with youth, visitors, workshop participants, animals, shared spaces, and team members
• Is willing to learn and follow rural safety practices

Assets

The following would be helpful, but are not required:

• Experience with tools, making, building, landscaping, maintenance, cleanup, or production work
• Experience with social media, photography, video, websites, or storytelling
• Interest in product design, CAD, prototyping, or manufacturing
• Experience working with youth, visitors, customers, or workshop participants
• Driver’s licence and vehicle
• PAL
• Comfort living or working in a rural setting
• Interest in circular economy, tourism, rural innovation, or northern entrepreneurship

Requirements

Because this role may involve working with youth and workshop participants, a Vulnerable Sector Check will be required.

This position is funded through the 2026 Canada Summer Jobs program. To be eligible, applicants must:

• Be between 15 and 30 years old at the start of employment
• Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or refugee
• Be legally entitled to work in Canada
• Have a valid Social Insurance Number
• Please note that international students are not eligible under the Canada Summer Jobs program

Why this job is different

This position is part production assistant, part workshop support, part creative storytelling, part rural start-up energy, and part hands-on basecamp cleanup and maintenance.

You will help Yukon Plastics build something unusual: a place where waste plastic, product design, education, tourism, and northern resourcefulness come together.

The work will be practical. Some days may involve sorting plastic, making products, organizing materials, cleaning workspaces, installing signs, clearing areas, preparing workshop spaces, or helping with site maintenance. Other days may involve taking photos, writing web content, preparing for visitors, assisting with workshops, or helping shape the story of Crooked Creek Basecamp.
