Yukon Venture Angels is looking for a Chief Executive Officer
About Yukon Venture Angels (YVA)
YVA is a volunteer-driven, not-for-profit organisation committed to connecting passionate entrepreneurs with knowledgeable investors to drive economic growth in Yukon by building and supporting a thriving private-capital entrepreneurial ecosystem.
To those ends, YVA is dedicated to:
- Work towards making Yukon an attractive and genuinely competitive jurisdiction for angel investing and for start-up enterprises.
- Seek and facilitate investment opportunities for both accredited and non-accredited investors, including via syndicated investments and such other (equity and loan) investment vehicles as might be possible.
- Build angel competence, contacts and experience in service to expanding Yukon’s private investment ecosystem, including supporting investor education.
- Champion local and external angel capital to support enterprises in Yukon and elsewhere, ranging from small businesses to global facing, scalable enterprises with growth potential that goes beyond Yukon.
- Participate actively in Canadian and global angel networks.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Position Summary:
Reporting to the Board of Directors (the “Board”) through the Chair, the CEO is the Board’s official link to the operating organisation, and has overall accountability to the Board for the day-to-day operations, performance and direction of Yukon Venture Angels within its mission and policies. The CEO exercises all authority granted by the Board to manage the organisation.
The CEO acts as a professional advisor to the Board, participates in the strategic development and growth of the organisation and works in partnership with the Executive Committee of the Board and the Board as a whole. In this capacity, the CEO takes on the responsibilities to ensure that the working relationship between the Board and CEO is supportive, positive, productive and includes mutual, ongoing and constructive feedback. The CEO ensures that all employees/contractors understand and respect the organisational structure.
Qualifications:
Ideal Candidate:
Our ideal CEO is a founder. You would be the first. Building on years of volunteer hours, you’ll need to recruit and lead a community in the digital age, connecting that community to a world of opportunity while being vigilant to risk. There are deliverables and commitments to honour, a strategy to drive forward, investors to court, partnerships to establish, conflicts to reconcile, hurdles to overcome, regulatory burdens… You’ve done this before. You already know that a founder wears all the hats until they fund growth. For now, you’ll be supported by the existing volunteer committees and the hours they will dedicate, as well as having access to some specialist mentorship.
Your job is to build a financial intelligence organisation that sources, filters and communicates investment opportunities to a paying membership–a membership that needs rapid and targeted expansion. Delivering on deal flow is critical to that success. You’ll need to administer the people and paperwork of the organisation, but you’re going to source funding for a team to help you. Tapping into the hard lessons and successful pathways of your previous experience, you’re a growth manager with an eye for lean efficiency. The ecosystem you’re building is the bedrock to developing a functional startup economy in the Yukon and will require leadership by example.
Education and Experience
- Post-secondary degree in business administration, finance, nonprofit management, or a related field (or demonstrated equivalent combination of education and experience).
- Relevant experience in a senior leadership role, preferably within a nonprofit or investment organisation.
- Proven track record of successful fundraising, capital investment, and financial management.
- Proven experience in a mid-manager to senior capacity role.
- Background in a business-related field.
- Ideally the successful candidate has a variety of experience with Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SME’s) in a broad range of sectors and of growing companies through private investment.
Skills and Competencies
- Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate others.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships and influence stakeholders.
- Strategic thinker with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Knowledge of relevant angel investment landscapes and entrepreneurial ecosystems.
- Ability to multitask, manage multiple priorities, pivot with change, and work effectively under pressure.
- Familiar with the unique aspects, needs and environments of northern and/or rural entrepreneur ecosystems.
- Strong understanding of business and marketing strategy, and their link to business finance needs, with the ability to quickly grasp sector-specific applications.
- Proficiency in strategic and operational planning.
- Strong business and financial management skills.
- Ability to understand and prepare business cases and operating plans.
Technical Proficiency
- Proficient in Office systems, contact management software, remote working systems, software, use of Generative AI tools and Internet research.
- Online community management including basic social media skills.
Personal Attributes
- An effective personal connector and relationship builder, catalysing partners and networks.
- Passionate about the mission and values of YVA.
- High level of integrity, professionalism, and accountability.
- A self-starter with an entrepreneurial mindset, and a proactive and innovative approach to challenges.
Other details:
- Full-time (for the right candidate, alternatives may be considered).
- Salary range from $90K to $110K/year (commensurate on experience and include future bonus programs in achieving successful outcomes/targets).
- 10% employee-driven health and benefits spending account.
- Location: Whitehorse, Yukon with travel involved and periodic remote work optional.
- The successful applicant will receive the benefit of being supported and mentored by the former Executive Director of Canada’s most successful angel investing organisation.
- This position is a term position until March 31, 2027 and is dependent on funding.
- Starting date: Immediately (to finalise with the successful candidate).
