Microbiology Laboratory Technologist – Laboratory Services – Whitehorse General Hospital

(PSAC Bargaining Unit)

Term Part Time Position – 56.25 hours biweekly

June 5, 2017 to May 4, 2018

Reporting to the Laboratory Services Manager, the position provides diagnostic Microbiological testing for physicians and other health care providers without immediate support or consultation of an on-site Medical Microbiologist. The Microbiology technologist’s responsibilities include: performing laboratory procedures in all areas of microbiology; ensuring completion of assigned work; operating, maintaining and troubleshooting microbiology laboratory equipment; preparing accurate reports; participating in teaching, educational, safety and quality improvement programs; observing and following hospital and departmental policies and procedures.

Knowledge and skills required for this position are as follows:

• Current knowledge and experience in microbiology laboratory principles, theories, procedures, methods, techniques and practices;
• Ability to perform routine and special microbiology analysis and procedures;
• Ability to maintain records and prepare comprehensive and concise microbiology reports;
• Ability to maintain patient confidentiality;
• Ability to work in a team and independently when required;
• Ability to deal with interruptions, distractions, time pressures, concurrent demands and client pressures
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills;

Candidates must be certified as a Registered Medical Laboratory Technologist in Canada and be a member in good standing with the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS), 1 – 2 years recent experience working in a Canadian accredited medical microbiology laboratory are required.

A degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or related field, additional education related to infection prevention and control, continuous quality improvement; operational knowledge of laboratory information systems, preferably Meditech (Microbiology module) would be considered an asset for this position.
