Role Overview

Volunteer ESL Tutors support adult learners in developing their English language skills in a welcoming and respectful environment. Tutors work one-on-one or with small groups to help learners improve their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills, build confidence, and achieve their personal, educational, and employment goals. This role plays an important part in helping newcomers and other English language learners participate more fully in the community.


Responsibilities

Meet with an assigned learner on a regular schedule (typically once or twice per week).
Support learners in developing their English speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.
Plan and deliver engaging tutoring sessions based on the learner’s goals, interests, and language level.
Encourage learner participation, confidence, and independence.

Experience and Skills

Strong English language communication skills.
Patience, empathy, and the ability to encourage and motivate adult learners.
Ability to build positive and respectful relationships.
Reliable, organized, and able to commit to a regular tutoring schedule.
Previous teaching, tutoring, mentoring, coaching is an asset but not required.

Estimated Time Commitment

This is a flexible volunteer opportunity designed to fit around your existing commitments. Most tutors meet with their learner for 1–2 hours per week, with scheduling arranged collaboratively between the tutor and learner. Volunteers are encouraged to commit to tutoring for at least three months to support learner progress, but there is flexibility around vacation, work, and family obligations. Yukon Learn staff work closely with volunteers to find a schedule that is manageable and rewarding for everyone involved.
