Kitchen Supervisor
We are recruiting for a supportive, knowledgeable, and engaged Kitchen Supervisor. The ideal candidate could have a background in either food preparation or support/education work and is looking to expand their career, contribute to the community and take on more responsibility.
Under the direction of the Manager, Employment Support Programs, the Kitchen Supervisor will manage the daily operations of Opportunities Yukon’s commercial kitchen. This position is responsible for supervising Cornerstone Kitchen staff and the training/mentoring of OY work experience clients.
The goal of Opportunities Yukon (OY) employment support programs is to provide comprehensive training and support for clients who experience barriers to navigating the job market and building their careers. The Cornerstone Kitchen provides daily meals to Residential Support Program clients that are fresh, healthy and cost-effective.
Job Duties
- Supervise kitchen operations, ensure routines and processes are developed/ followed.
- Oversee a team of 2-3 part-time staff, with potential future growth.
- Kitchen staff scheduling.
- Connect with clients and staff to ensure the menu is in line with likes/dislikes.
- Provide mentorship, support and training to kitchen staff.
- Create and maintain a work environment that is supportive and inclusive.
- Ensure kitchen staff have good foundational skills for kitchen work.
- Optimize kitchen setup and arrangement for efficient workflow.
- Establish and maintain Food Safe practices and safe work practices.
- Maintain a clean and orderly work site.
- Engage clients to increase food literacy.
- Develop menus and recipes that are healthy, fresh, meet client needs and are cost-effective.
- Order food and maintain inventory.
- Maintain kitchen equipment.
- Work with the employment support team to integrate the kitchen into the employment support program.
- Prepare and submit accurate reports and records
- Participate in strategic planning and growth of kitchen and food services at OY
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

- Ability to interpret and apply Environmental Health Regulations
- Ability to monitor and report kitchen-related building code violations, i.e., fire, safety plans
- Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing
- Ability to work individually as well as part of a team
- High level of integrity and work ethic
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and practice discretion.
Education/Training/Certification Desired
- A certificate or diploma in culinary arts, food services management or equivalent.
- Demonstrated experience managing staff and supporting multidisciplinary teams;
- An equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience may be considered.
- Experience in a support role is an asset
- Experience working in a commercial kitchen or food prep environment is an asset
- Legally entitled to work in Canada
- 5+ Years experience preparing and cooking meals in a commercial kitchen
- Strong knowledge of food preparation, sanitation, inventory management, and kitchen operations
Working Conditions
- The position regularly works in a commercial kitchen (95%), manages competing demands and priorities, and interacts with others under varying circumstances, including highly sensitive client situations.
- Ongoing daily physical activity including repetitive movements, walking, standing, lifting and carrying boxes/bags.
- Exposure to various types of cleaning chemicals.
- Adherence to safety procedures and practices, including the use of PPE, minimizes the risk of injury.
- Regular weekday schedule
