Position Description:
Join our team at ElderActive Recreation Association!
We are a non-profit dedicated to enriching the lives of seniors aged 55 and up through recreation, including outdoor adventures! We're seeking a part-time hiking guide who is passionate about nature and enjoys sharing that passion with others year round.
Start Date: October 2026
Role Responsibilities:
- Guide hiking trips for senior participants, ensuring safety, enjoyment, and engagement.
- Share knowledge of local flora, fauna, and history, enhancing the educational experience.
- Foster a welcoming environment that promotes physical activity and social interaction among seniors.
- Lead guided Nordic hiking or winter hiking.
- Lead snowshoeing excursions if weather permits.
- Lead 2 levels of difficulty Leisure (easy) and Fitness (more advanced).
- Collect payments for activities.
- Keep accurate records of attendance.
- Ensure waiver forms and photo release forms are signed by all participants.
- Must conduct reconnaissance of the hiking locations to check for trail conditions, accessibility of parking, and length/difficulty of the planned trail route.
- Provide the program coordinator information about hike location, maps, meeting location and any relevant trail conditions.
Position Details:
- Hours: 3-6 hours per week
- Hourly Rate: $26-$28 per hour
- Location: Various trails within Dawson City and the surrounding area.
- Schedule: Flexible, weekdays mid day 11 am - 3 pm preferred
- 2 hours a week will be on hikes. 1 hour for transportation and recon/admin.
Qualifications:
- Experience leading hiking or outdoor activities, prioritizing safety and participant enjoyment.
- Flexibility with changing weather conditions and openness to adapt where necessary.
- Strong communication skills, particularly in engaging with and accommodating senior individuals.
- Basic First Aid Certification: Required Standard First Aid. Wilderness First Aid is an asset.
- Passion for the outdoors and promoting physical well-being among seniors.
- Experience and knowledge of bear spray and bear safety is an asset.
Additional Requirements:
- Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check: Successful candidates must pass a criminal records check conducted by the RCMP.
- Must have a valid Class 5 Driver's License.
- The position requires a personal vehicle to transport supplies to the activity locations.
