The Director of Health & Safety is responsible for establishing and leading the Health and Safety strategy, programs, and culture as the company moves toward development. Candidates who demonstrate the experience to integrate Health, Safety and Environmental requirements into an “HSE” management system are preferred. This role requires the implementation of HSE systems, regulatory compliance, and critical risk management in northern, remote project environments.
This is a strategic and operational leadership role requiring deep experience in safety system development and implementation, northern field operations, and change management within a rapidly growing resource company.
Location
- Regular rotations to remote field camps are required (May-September).
- Position may be based out of Vancouver, BC or Whitehorse, YT.
- Frequent travel to regional communities (e.g. Ross River, Mayo) and project sites.
Experience & Key Skills
- Degree or advanced diploma, or recognized designation in Occupational Health and Safety, mining, or a related discipline required.
- 10–15+ years of progressive HSE leadership experience in mining, construction, or resource development.
- Proven experience implementing HSE systems in a transitioning development company is considered an asset.
- Strong background in remote northern operations, contractor management, and building a positive safety culture.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills.
- Ability and willingness to travel regularly to remote sites and northern communities.
Key Tasks
Strategic Leadership
- Develop and execute a corporate HSE Framework aligned with YT and Canadian regulations and industry best practices.
- Provide HSE insights, performance reporting, and strategic risk assessments to senior leadership and the Board.
- Design, implement, and continuously improve an integrated HSE Management System, including risk management, contractor oversight, emergency response, training and occupational hygiene.
System Design & Implementation
- Design, implement, and continuously improve an integrated HSE Management System, including risk management, contractor oversight, emergency response, training and occupational hygiene.
Field Operations Support
- Oversee safety planning and compliance for all exploration and development activities across remote camps.
- Partner with field operations and logistics teams to ensure safe work practices, hazard controls and audit readiness.
Critical Risk & Incident Management
- Establish and lead a Critical Control Management program suitable for remote northern operations.
- Implement a transparent, learning-focused incident investigation framework that strengthens organizational safety maturity.
Contractor Management
- Develop and enforce contractor prequalification, onboarding, monitoring, and audit processes.
- Ensure consistent safety standards across diverse contractor groups and project phases.
Training, Leadership Development and Culture
- Build and deliver competency‑based training across all functions.
- Coach leaders in safety leadership behaviours and embed recognition programs for safety excellence.
Occupational Health & Hygiene
- Oversee programs for health monitoring, fatigue management, sanitation, and remote medical response.
- Ensure field infrastructure supports high standards of worker health and well-being.
Compliance, Governance and Reporting
- Lead HSE regulatory compliance audits and ensure adherence to permits and reporting standards.
- Prepare executive-level HSE reports, risk dashboards, and annual performance summaries.
- Promote a positive health, safety, social responsibility, and environmental culture.
