Occupation Summary

Drywall installers and finishers apply, install and finish gypsum wallboard, lath and other materials to interior and exterior walls and ceilings to produce smooth or decorative surfaces. They are employed by construction companies, drywall contractors, and renovation firms.

Main Duties

Drywall installers perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Measure, cut and fit drywall sheets for installation on walls and ceilings
  • Secure drywall panels to wood or metal studs using nails, screws, or adhesives
  • Install corner beads and metal reinforcements
  • Tape over joints using joint compound and tape
  • Apply multiple coats of compound and sand seams and joints smooth
  • Fabricate and install suspended metal ceiling grids and place panels
  • Repair cracks, holes, and water damage in drywall surfaces
  • Read blueprints and follow specifications
  • Ensure compliance with safety procedures and building codes

Employment Requirements

  • Completion of secondary school is usually required
  • Completion of a 3–4 year apprenticeship program OR
  • 3–4 years of related work experience in the trade
  • Trade certification may be available but is voluntary in most provinces/territories

  • Physically demanding
  • Repetitive tasks (lifting, reaching, sanding)
  • Exposure to dust and noise
  • Work at heights may be required
