Seeking a full-time yard labourer in a busy metal recycling facility and pick-a-part vehicle scrap yard. A yard labourer is responsible for manually sorting, processing, and organizing scrap metal, as well as assisting customers, coworkers, and clients in our busy recycling yard. The role involves heavy lifting, manually sorting materials, and helping to maintain a safe, clean yard environment. It requires strong physical stamina, endurance and an ability to work outside in all weather conditions, as well, some basic customer service and cash-handling skills are necessary.
Core Responsibilities:
-Customer Assistance: Strong emphasis is on providing exemplary customer service by helping unload customer vehicles and safely directing traffic in the drop-off areas. Also, you will be trained in our office to occasionally respond to customer requests by phone or email, to search our online pick-a-part inventory for potential customers, to collect and process scale tickets and for weighing out incoming ferrous/non-ferrous metals and charging the client accordingly. You will need to have some numerical skills to assist with point-of-sale (POS) transactions, as well as strong organizational and multitasking skills with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
-Material Sorting: Manually identifying, grading, and separating ferrous (iron, steel) and non-ferrous (copper, aluminum, brass, stainless steel) metals. Familiarity with scrap metal grades, logistics and metal recycling markets is highly valued but not necessary as we will train you within our specific programs.
-Processing: Operating recycling machinery such as wire strippers, and mechanical shears to prepare metals for shipping. Comfort with using small hand tools, power tools, a pallet jack are required with potential to possibly operate a forklift or other heavy machinery.
-Yard Maintenance: Keeping the workspace free of debris, organizing/sorting metals for transport, safely arranging metal piles to ensure the facility remains accessible, and assisting with daily housekeeping/general maintenance, as needed.
-Other duties as assigned.
Key Qualifications:
-Reliable and punctual with a strong work ethic.
-Ability to stand, bend, walk, and lift up to 50 lbs regularly.
-Willingness to work mostly outdoors in all weather conditions (rain, snow, heat) and in an environment with occasional industrial noise and dust.
-Proficient in speaking, reading and writing English.
-CSA approved steel-toed footwear required by all staff on site.
-Knowledge of Yukon recycling practices and materials is a plus. Knowledge of metal recycling is a huge PLUS!
-Work collaboratively with other team members to maintain a smooth and efficient operation.
-Follow safety guidelines and procedures, report any safety concerns or incidents to the supervisor.
-Work with frequent interruptions, maintain emotional control under stress.
-Adhere to company policies, procedures, and security protocols related to cash handling, credit card transactions, fraud prevention, metals recycling and customer privacy, and ensure compliance with applicable laws and environmental regulations.
Work Environment:
-We are located approximately 20 kms south of Whitehorse, with no public transit available. Your own transportation to and from the jobsite is required.
Starting Wage: Negotiable
