Capacity Building & Programs Lead
Yukonstruct Society is seeking a dynamic leader to join our team of innovators and changemakers. Our mission is to provide access to communal space, quality resources, shared knowledge, and a collaborative environment that helps entrepreneurs, creatives, startups, and makers connect and grow. We operate a coworking space (Cospace), a makerspace (Makespace), business support services and programming — with a growing focus on capacity building, including infrastructure development, trades and workforce transition, and skills-based economic resilience across the Yukon.
About the Role
We’re looking for a highly motivated and passionate individual who believes that entrepreneurs — including tradespeople, builders, and skilled workers — can transform the world. The Capacity Building & Programs Lead is dedicated to ensuring entrepreneurship and workforce development are accessible to everyone in the Yukon. This role encompasses hands-on business support, workforce upskilling and trades transition programming, signature program leadership, travel to communities across the territory, and management of contractors and volunteers who support our work.
This is a developing and evolving position. Duties below reflect current priorities, but the role will grow as the needs of our entrepreneurial and workforce community do.
Wages: Commensurate with experience
Benefits: Extended health and dental, vacation, and leave. The position is a 1-year term.
Priority will be given to candidates with direct experience as entrepreneurs, tradespeople, or skilled workers — we believe lived experience in these fields is a core asset for this role.
Position Responsibilities
1. Workforce Development & Trades Transition Support (20%)
Lead the design and delivery of programming that supports Yukoners transitioning into, through, or out of trades careers and infrastructure-sector work. This is a primary focus of the role, encompassing upskilling initiatives, sector-specific workshops, and wraparound supports that build a more resilient and adaptive Yukon workforce.
- Develop and deliver workshops and learning pathways focused on trades entrepreneurship, contractor business skills, project management, estimating, and construction sector fundamentals.
- Partner with industry associations, apprenticeship bodies, and infrastructure employers to co-design responsive training that meets real workforce needs.
- Support workers navigating career transitions — including those moving from resource industries into trades, construction, or skilled service sectors — with targeted upskilling and business literacy resources.
- Design programming that addresses workforce resilience: helping individuals and teams adapt to changing economic conditions, technology adoption in trades, and emerging infrastructure priorities.
- Collaborate with post-secondary institutions, the Yukon government, and First Nations organizations to align programming with regional workforce development strategies.
- Track participation outcomes and sectoral impact; contribute data and narrative to workforce development reporting and grant deliverables.
2. Signature Program Support — Entrepreneurial Capacity Building (20%)
Manage the ongoing delivery of Yukonstruct’s established signature programs, including the Startup Bootcamp and the Hougen Group of Companies Mentorship Program, ensuring they remain relevant to a workforce and trades-inclusive entrepreneurial community. Research and develop new workshops and events that support entrepreneurs at all stages from pre-ideation through to growth.
- Lead ongoing facilitation of the Startup Bootcamp, evolving the program based on community feedback and needs.
- Research and recruit local and external instructors, speakers, and mentors to ensure Yukonstruct is a primary knowledge resource for the Yukon entrepreneurial community.
- Coordinate with ecosystem partners to cross-promote programming, minimize gaps, and support entrepreneurs across all stages and sectors.
- Lead ongoing management of Hougen Group of Companies Mentorship Program.
3. Infrastructure Development & Upskilling Initiatives (15%)
Champion programming and partnerships that build capacity in Yukon’s infrastructure and skilled trades ecosystem, positioning Yukonstruct as a hub for practical knowledge, tools, and networks that support builders, contractors, and makers.
- Identify gaps in local infrastructure workforce capacity and develop targeted programming responses, including entrepreneurial development courses, peer learning sessions, etc.
- Facilitate access to Makespace tools and training for tradespeople, fabricators, and infrastructure entrepreneurs seeking to prototype, upskill, or launch new ventures.
- Develop relationships with infrastructure developers, municipal and territorial government, and First Nations to surface shared workforce priorities and co-develop relevant programming.
- Stay current on emerging tools, materials, and methods in the trades and construction sectors and translate these into accessible workshop content.
- Research and recruit instructors, speakers, and mentors with trades and infrastructure expertise to ensure Yukonstruct is a credible knowledge resource for this sector.
4. Community Outreach & Sector Engagement (15%)
Travel to Yukon communities to deliver programming and represent Yukonstruct, with a focus on reaching tradespeople, rural entrepreneurs, and workforce participants outside of Whitehorse.
- Design and facilitate community-facing events, workshops, and displays tailored to local workforce and infrastructure contexts.
- Partner with community organizations, industry groups, and First Nations to plan and execute events aligned with Yukonstruct’s goals.
- Advocate for rural entrepreneurs and tradespeople, developing programs that meaningfully serve Yukoners across the territory.
- Submit a seasonal travel schedule and budget for community visits and workshops.
- Coordinate with ecosystem partners to cross-promote programming, minimize gaps, and support participants across all stages and sectors.
5. Pathfinding Services — Business Advising (15%)
Provide one-on-one business consultation and ecosystem navigation to new and growing entrepreneurs, with particular attention to those operating in or transitioning into infrastructure, construction, and trades sectors.
- Deliver Pathfinding sessions in Whitehorse and Yukon communities, tailored to local context and delivered in culturally appropriate and accessible formats.
- Connect clients with relevant tools, resources, mentors, and partner services; ensure warm handoffs to partner agencies including those specializing in trades training and workforce development.
- Build and maintain a robust network of experts, mentors, tradespeople, and industry contacts to support clients at all stages.
- Maintain records and track client progress, interactions, and outcomes; generate regular reports for continuous improvement.
- Maintain office hours on-site and respond to inquiries in a timely manner.
6. Reporting, Data & Grant Compliance (15%)
Ensure programs are well-documented, outcomes are tracked, and reporting meets grant and partner requirements — including economic development funders and infrastructure-sector grants.
- Submit monthly and quarterly written reports summarizing activities, participation, outcomes, and recommendations.
- Coordinate, gather, and organize data to support grant reporting and evaluation, including workforce development metrics.
- Maintain records in accordance with program guidelines and prepare quarterly and annual summaries.
