Yukonstruct Makerspace Society (YMS) is seeking a dynamic leader to join our growing team of innovators and change makers. The society’s mission is to provide access to communal space, quality resources, shared knowledge and a collaborative environment that helps entrepreneurs and makers. We do this through operating two locations: 1) Yukonstruct, the first makerspace north of 60 including industrial wood and metal shops, 3D printers, CNC machines, coding lab and other maker equipment, tools and spaces; 2) (co)space, Canada’s only coworking space north of 60.

YMS opened its doors over 3 years ago and the community response has been overwhelmingly positive. We are a rapidly growing organization that is leading the Yukon’s community of innovators, makers, and entrepreneurs in developing their idea to the next level. We are in a stage of development and refinement and looking for a team leader to help us grow into the future. We are working at achieving our strategic plan goals of:

  • Financial Sustainability, through diversifying our revenue mix.

  • Clear Operational Practices, through developing operational and decision making systems.

  • Physical Space Development, through seeking a new larger location to bring both coworking and makerspace into one building with other partners to create an Innovation Hub for Canada's North. 

  • Programming, developing our programming to support members and sustainability.

  • Community and Identity, by developing our brand and community role.

The Operations Director will be responsible for overseeing the smooth operation of both the makerspace and the coworking space and working with a team of directors reporting to the Executive Director. The Operations Director will be a team player who is self-directed and interested and capable of creating new solutions to current challenges and new opportunities. We are operating in a dynamic and ever-changing environment and tolerance for change and uncertainty is a must.

The successful candidate will have:

  • a post secondary degree. Specialization in an area such as education, computer science, engineering, technology, trades, business or other related areas would be considered an asset.

  • Experience supervising staff.

  • Experience overseeing operations and/or facilities, ideally in a membership-based environment.

  • Experience and interest in the maker movement, S.T.E.A.M. skills, and/or entrepreneurism.

  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems, work positively in a team, and excellent communication skills.

  • Trade skills, IT skills, machine maintenance, teaching skills all considered assets.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

> Operations and Facility management (40%)

  • Responsible for ensuring all YMS Facilities are clean and functional for users.

  • Working with the Executive Director in managing tenant agreements

  • Evaluating and developing systems (physical and process)

  • Supervising maintenance and repair of equipment and facilities

> Membership, Partner, and Guest Management (15%)

  • Maintaining the membership systems.

  • Responding to rental booking requests

  • Working with the ED to develop and maintain partnerships

  • Ensuring member and guest experience is positive and ever improving

  • Ensuring that the capacity is maximized and managed effectively

>  Supervising Staff and Volunteers (20%)

  • Overseeing the volunteer program and managing volunteer tasks and projects.

  • Supervising and scheduling 3-4 seasonal, PT staff and contractors.

  • Filling in at the front desk some hours of the week.

> Administration (10%)

  • Budgeting and expense management

  • Activity scheduling

  • Assisting ED in achieving the strategic plan.

> Custom Program and Project Consultation and Delivery (5%)

> Additional Responsibilities (5%)

COMPENSATION AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

  • Up to 40 hours per week with flexibility to suit the right candidate

  • Work location is in Whitehorse, Yukon between two locations

  • Salary starts at $30/hr
