Task description: Volunteering on the Yukon Distress and Support Line (YDSL) at Many Rivers Counselling and Support Services is an opportunity to ‘be there’ in times of need for members of your community.

The vision of the Yukon Distress and Support Line is to help reduce social isolation, mental health challenges, and feelings of distress by offering unconditional, non-judgmental listening and support.

As a trained volunteer you will apply an active listening model, while taking telephone calls from the community. The active listening model encourages individuals to help themselves by exploring their feelings and their options in times of distress.


  • Providing telephone support, information, and referrals to callers
  • Participating in periodic professional supervision and feedback sessions

Skills needed:

  • Non-judgmental attitude
  • Interpersonal & communication skills
  • Understanding of confidentiality
  • Knowledge of community resources
  • Successful completion of volunteer interview
  • Successful completion of Yukon Distress & Support Line training program (will be provided)
  • Access to transportation in order to fulfill shift requirements

Time commitment: Volunteers are asked to commit to 2 five-hour shifts per month for a commitment period of at least 12 months. All shifts are from the hours of 7pm – 12am.

Incentive for the volunteer: Volunteers receive 16 hours of Yukon Distress & Support Line Training. The next training sessions are April 29th and May 6th (9:00-4:30, both days).

Volunteers will also have the opportunity to participate in an optional Critical Incident Stress Management Training as well as ongoing evening training on various topics related to the line.

Following the completion of the volunteer commitment, references will be made available upon request.
