This posting is for one permanent full-time Parking Meter Attendant and one permanent part-time (19 hours per week) Parking Meter Attendant.

Parking Meter Attendant

Department: Bylaw Services

Job Summary:

The incumbent provides enforcement of the City’s Traffic Bylaw relating to parking meters in the downtown core.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Patrol assigned area on foot to monitor parking meter and accessible parking violations and issue Summary Conviction Act tickets and written warnings to violators.
  2. Collect coins deposited in meters.
  3. Perform traffic control duties such as setting up barricades and temporary signs, placing bags on parking meters to limit their use, or directing traffic.
  4. Respond to inquiries from the general public and forward other bylaw violations to department staff for follow up.
  5. Report hazardous conditions such as icy sidewalks or missing/faulty traffic control devices.
  6. Mark tires of parked vehicles with chalk, record time of marking and return at regular intervals to ensure that parking time limits are not exceeded.
  7. Investigate and answer complaints regarding contested parking citations and determine their validity.
  8. Appear in court at hearings regarding contested traffic citations and swearing of documents.
  9. Act as Traffic Constable when required.
  10. Prepare and maintain required records, including logs of parking enforcement activities, faulty meters and records of contested citations.
  11. Follow, so far as is reasonably practicable, established safety procedures and standards.
  12. Other related duties.

Position Requirements

Working Conditions:

Up to 40 hours per week scheduled anytime between the hours of 0700-2400, Monday to Saturday. Exposure to extreme temperatures and inclement weather. Physically able to walk on asphalt and concrete for 7 hours a day.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • 3 months enforcement experience.
  • RCMP Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Ability to understand and apply the provisions of the City Traffic Bylaw and other regulatory bylaws as required.
  • Ability to deal effectively and politely with the public and to effectively communicate (both verbally and in writing).
  • Ability to foster and maintain effective relationships among peers and/or stakeholders.
  • Valid Yukon class 5 drivers’ license.

Additional certification required within one and a half years of employment:

  • Conflict Resolution and Dealing with Anger.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Examples of Equipment to Operate:

Ability to operate ERP software programs, spreadsheets, electronic mail, word processing, etc.
