2017 Swan Haven Education Programmer

The Yukon Wildlife Preserve is seeking self-motivated, team-players to develop, deliver, and evaluate Swan Haven School programs to Yukon students. The programs will focus on swans and water bird migration.

Swan Haven Education Programmers will develop and deliver curriculum-linked programs to Yukon school children. The successful candidates must be independent, enthusiastic and committed to improving their knowledge and delivery of interpretive programs.

This is a month long contract running from March 27th to April 28th 2017 (23 days at 8 hours / day) Work location is at Swan Haven Interpretive Centre at M’Clintock Bay at Marsh Lake 40km south of Whitehorse. Transportation to/from Whitehorse is provided as a part of this position. Wage: $ 15.50/hour.

The Yukon Wildlife Preserve is a zoological institution and a non-profit, charity dedicated to education, conservation and research on Boreal and Arctic Ecology. This position is well suited to candidates studying education, interpretation, community development, social sciences, environmental science, zoology, biology or a related field. The YWP is seeking to build a diverse and energetic staff to achieve our mission!

Duties:

  • Participate in staff training to develop a working knowledge and tool-kit of strategies for communicating boreal and arctic ecology in an engaging manner;
  • Learn, personalize and deliver outdoor, curriculum-linked programs for students, including interfacing with teachers, volunteers, and educational assistants to support student learning;
  • Learning, personalizing and delivering engaging, interpretive tours to diverse audiences;
  • Manage and maintain equipment and materials for delivering programs (including vehicles, tents, etc.);
  • Participate in regular evaluation exercises of program design and delivery;
  • Contribute to final reports summarizing and evaluating all aspects of program delivery;
  • Maintenance duties including light cleaning as required;
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications:

  • Proven ability to deliver engaging, knowledge based interpretive programs to diverse audiences;
  • Interest, knowledge or experience in Arctic and Boreal Ecology, including migratory birds;
  • Ability to work independently and maintain enthusiasm with minimal supervision;
  • Strong leadership and teamwork skills;
  • Technical Requirements:
  • o Standard First Aid Certificate;

    o Ability to pass a criminal record check;

  • Ability to speak French is an asset;
  • Education in a relevant subject is an asset (for example, biology, education, interpretation, natural resources, etc.).
